THE season opener last week saw a number of close games in mild weather with players glad to be back playing competition bowls after enduring months of COVID lockdowns.
DIVISION 1
Drouin are determined to win another top-flight premiership and started the season well with all rinks up against Trafalgar, 16-85 to 0-36.
Drouin controlled the game with Denise Hamilton and her rink of Graeme Aubrey, Jan Aubrey and Dennis Throup having a 27-14 win over Sue Robinson and her team of Tim Anderson, Barbara Evans and Paul Dawson.
Sheryl Atkinson and her rink of Elaine Thorpe, Arthur Moore and Mark Atkinson enjoyed a big 33-8 win over Mary Holdsworth and her team of Carol Saunders, Ian Riley and Ken Capper.
Maureen Leighton and her team of Mary Firth, John Leighton and Les Firth completed the clean sweep for Drouin with a 25-14 victory over Heather Taylor and her rink of Carolyn Fox, Pat Tatterson and Ian Miles.
Newborough travelled to Morwell Club with Joan Goldie and her rink of Robert Goldie, Jeff Wetzel and Julie Jackson having a narrow win over the Morwell Club rink of Bernie Kirkup and her rink of Roger Rejmer, Tess Borg and Betty Burridge.
Beryl Noblett and her team of Iyoko Yoshimura, Sue Karleusa and Tara Harle had a 23-14 win for Morwell Club over Jo-Anne Michaels and her team of Tony Knipping, Mary Whelan and Nosha Michaels.
Debbie Kennedy and her team of Josh Kennedy, Barry Daley and Fran Clark won the day for Newborough with a 25-12 win over Jan Karleusa and her team of Dashaa Martin, Gail Rejmer and Bernie Marino to seal the five-shot victory as Newborough 14-56 defeated Morwell Club 2-51.
Traralgon RSL began the season well against Morwell with Shirley McKenzie and her rink of John Farquhar, Julie Sutcliffe and Joe Ward big winners for RSL with a 30-8 win over Lettie Mizzi and her rink of Ross Harford, Shirley Skinner and John Osborne.
Margaret Gibbins and her rink of Max Plant, Mary Collins and Max Gibbins continued the good work for RSL with a solid 21-17 win over Glenda Thompson and her team of Kevn Pigdon, Rita Reddiex and Lou Edge.
Kerry Wright and her rink of Bill and Judy Tumney together with Bob Skinner achieved two points for Morwell with a 17-14 win over Elaine Muir and her rink of Titch Hore, Margaret Morley and Max Aumann.
Traralgon RSL 14-65 defeated Morwell 2-42.
Warragul travelled to Traralgon and found the going very difficult, going down 16-80 to 0-36.
Paddy Francis led the way with her rink of William Francis, Barry Fernance and Rosie Lorenz winning 30-10 over the weakened rink of Gabrielle Draisma with a lead John Vickerman and third Kerri Currie, who unfortunately played with only three players.
Pat Trewin and her rink of Garry Trewin, Elaine Swan and Austin Gapper won 24-11 over Janette Gallasch and her rink of Ian Belling, Elsie Hefford and Peter Gallasch. Kathy Smiles and her rink of Matt Ogilvie, Shirley Whitechurch and Phil Mustoe completed the clean sweep with a 26-15 win over Linda McCoy and her rink of David Ferguson, Bob Currie and Margaret Keeffe.
DIVISION 2
Home green advantage was to the fore in Division 2 with all home sides winning.
Lorraine Horton and her rink of Richard Chetland, Steve Pallot and Hilda Woods carried the day for Moe with a 27-14 win over Lyn Jeffrey and her rink of Ron Westrup, Margaret Rhodes and David Tayles.
Margaret Owens and her rink of Necip Akarsu, Clive Newman and Irene Dawson led the Drouin (2) fightback with a 26-21 win over Val Griffiths and her rink of Robyn Dodd, Brenda Hosking and Sue Allford.
Mary Andrews and her Drouin (2) rink of Lyn Rippon, Andrew Blaby and Brian Thorpe with a score of 17-16 narrowly defeated Val Rodgers and her rink of Coral Reid, Shirley Ainsworth and Brian Rodgers, leaving Moe the winners with only one rink up,
Moe 12-64 defeated Drouin (2) 4-57.
Morwell (2) welcomed Neerim District with Irene Biggs and her rink of Helen Cook, Shirley Kolcze and Bob Wilson having a 23-15 victory over Pat Fraser-Aurisch and her rink of Graeme Wingrove, Neville Cousins and Thelma Schroeder.
Palma McNeill and her rink of Ron Draeger, John and Ann Kuhne helped Morwell (2) establish a good lead with a 24-16 win over Cookie Halligan and her rink of Richard Kerr, Dianne Tame and Jim Schroeder.
Karren Sheers and her rink of John Rochford, Gerald Winter and Kay Cousins gave Neerim two points, winning 18-16 over Jenny Medew and her rink of Russell Williams, Denise Pigdon and Julie Klein, leaving Morwell (2) the winners by 14 shots.
Morwell (2) 14-63 defeated Neerim District 2-49.
Adrienne Birchall and her rink of Ruth Verhagen, John Arnold and Graham Cocks had a day out for Newborough (2) with a 32-5 win over Leeane Broadbent and her rink of Duncan Hanlon, Sherree Stanton and Geoff Unwin.
Carmel Goss and her rink of Glenys Perkins, Jenny Cocks and Robbert Cook continued the Newborough (2) form with a 28-13 win over Jo Leslie and her rink of Ian Stevenson, Annie Maruzza and Brett Harle.
The lone winner for Morwell Club (2) was Cheryl Reynolds and her rink of Steve Kilpatrick, Norma Tyrer and Nobby Noblett winning 23-18 over Heather Mooney and her rink of Dianne Bertoli, Denise Ryan and Michael Holroyd.
Newborough (2) 14-77 defeated Morwell Club (2) 2-42.
Traralgon (2) travelled to Warragul (2) and for the visitors May Cross and her rink of Carolyn Roscholler, Chris Thomas and Graham Cross had a resounding 37-9 win over Chris Wilkins and her rink of John Bell, Bernie McIntosh and Gladys Atkinson. This big rink win was not enough to give Traralgon (2) the overall victory as Warragul (2) won the other two rinks with Glynis Mitchell and her team of Dawn and Gary Thomas together with Greg Mitchell winning 26-12 over Dettie Wylie and her team of Lee Olding, Marjorie Lawrence and Barbara Scott.
Margaret Ratcliffe and her rink of Alison Matthews, Matt Draisma and Keith Wilkins completed the Warragul (2) victory with a 29-10 win over Lyn Bloomfield and her rink of Frank Stake, Barbara Gapper and Dianne Bau leaving Warragul (2) the winners, 14-64 to 2-59.
DIVISION 3
Newborough (3) travelled to Trafalgar (2) with all three rinks up Joy Cadby and her rink of Helen Grubb, Ken Bechaz and Phil Marston defeated Margaret Moss 27-10.
Christine Cunningham and her rink of Lyn Madden, Spencer Goss and Jim Cuthbertson won 21-16 over Lyn Sephton. Marcia Evans and her rink of Lyn Akarsu, Keith Evans and Ian Preston had an 18-16 win over Helen Robertson.
Newborough (3) 16-66 defeated Trafalgar (2) 0-42.
Garfield and Morwell (3) had an interesting game with Susan Stansfield drawing with Jenny Duncan 19-19. For the visitors Sharlene Draeger had a narrow 18-17 win over Maureen Lamport. Lex Taylor carried the day for Garfield with a 28-14 win over Jan Moody.
Garfield 13-64 defeated Morwell (3) 3-51.
Traralgon (3) welcomed Warragul (3) and the home team won all three rinks as Muriel Johnson defeated Thelma Young 35-11, Stephanie Davidson defeated Barbara Maloni 22-13 and Maureen Rooney defeated Franciska Axford 23-11.
Traralgon (3) 16-80 defeated Warragul (3) 0-35.
Drouin (3) were home to Yinnar and Jenny Harris won 40-10 over Dini Hone to lay the foundations for a Yinnar win, while Meredith Kennon and Maureen McMillan drew 20-20. Gwen Price with a 28-10 win over Leanne Emond was unable to bridge the gap leaving Yinnar the winners by 12 shots.
Yinnar 13-70 defeated Drouin (3) 3-58.
DIVISION 4
Moe (2) 8-43 defeated Yarragon 2-41 with the winning Moe skipper Chris O’Reilly 29-15 and for Yarragon Marion Chetland 26-14.
Trafalgar (3) 8-42 with Sharon Macrae winning 28-7 was too strong for Morwell Club (3) 2-27 with Marie Stevenson winning 20-4.
Traralgon RSL (2) 10-46 defeated Drouin (4) 0-29 with winning skippers Pat Warfe 16-14 and Joan Lee 30-15.
Yallourn North 10-54 defeated Yinnar (2) 0-35 with the winning skips Dianne Thomas 28-25 and Marce Mallia 26-10.
Newborough (4) 10-56 defeated Traralgon (4) 0-35 with winning skippers Joan Lee 32-12 and Betty Williams 24-22.
THIS WEEK
TOMORROW sees Newborough, the only winning side in Division 1 who played away from home last week, taking on the big opening round victors Traralgon in a match which is always played with both clubs aiming to upset the other.
Traralgon RSL travels to Trafalgar and will look to continue their winning streak on the new green which should be a boon following the recent wet weather.
Morwell Club, after their good showing against Newborough last week, travel to near neighbour Morwell with both sides eager for their first win in what promises to be a competitive game.
Warragul after a difficult day last week have their near neighbours and reigning premiers Drouin looking to extend their lead at the top of the ladder with another big win.
In Division 2, all of the first round winners travel to play the four losers from last week who will all be seeking to record their first win. Newborough (2) travel to Neerim District, Moe travels to Traralgon (2), Warragul (2) travels to Morwell Club (2) and Morwell (2) travels to Drouin (2).
In Division 3, Trafalgar (2) travels to Morwell (3), Garfield visits Yinnar, Drouin (3) travels to Warragul (3) and Traralgon (3) travels to Newborough (3).
In Division 4, Morwell Club (3) travels to Drouin (4), Newborough (4) travels to Yinnar (2), Traralgon RSL (3) travels to Traralgon (4), Yallourn North visits Yarragon and Moe (2) travels to Trafalgar (3).
