After a round of competitive games last weekend, Mid Gippsland league teams are looking to round two to either shake off last week’s losses or to start a winning streak.
Yarragon will take on Trafalgar for the Waterloo Cup on Sunday at Yarragon.
The match was scheduled for Trafalgar, but its ground is still recovering from the resurfacing.
Matches between these arch rivals will continue to be played on Sundays after previous years’ success.
Yarragon and Trafalgar’s rivalry goes back more than 100 years and while history and current form say Trafalgar has the advantage, the Panther’s young side performed well last week and its new recruits proved handy.
Yarragon will be looking to come back from last week’s disappointing loss, which coach Shaun Kleeven said was caused by its failure to stick to the game plan in the second half.
Bloods coach Chris Kyriacou was pleased with the efforts of his young players last week and said selection before this Sunday’s game would be tough with key players Brendan Dawson and Leigh Stevens back in the side.
Kyriacou is confident going into the game, but last time the teams played Trafalgar won by a small margin.
Boolarra v Yinnar
Demon’s coach Tony Giardina is looking forward to a “big game” against Yinnar this weekend.
Both teams had disappointing losses last week, with wins slipping from their clutches in the last quarter and will be keen to get back on the winners list.
Giardina said his team would focus on improving its ball movement and kicking ahead of Saturday’s game.
Hill End v Newborough
After Hill End’s win against Mirboo North, coach Josh Tymenson told his players to not lose focus over these coming weeks.
They will certainly have to remain focussed, facing a confident Newborough at the Bulldog’s home.
Mirboo North v Morwell East
Morwell East will travel to Mirboo North this Saturday.
Both teams had close games last week, with Morwell East taking a win with a strong last quarter, while Mirboo North’s final quarter performance was lacking.
The Tigers’ accuracy let them down and this will be one of the things they will be working on this week.
Coach Troy Hamilton gave full credit to Hill End’s side and its ability to apply pressure and move the ball well.
Hamilton said his side is desperate for win and expects it to be a close game.
Yallourn Yallourn North v Thorpdale
Yallourn Yallourn North’s triumph over Yarragon last week should have them in a good mind-set to play Thorpdale this weekend.
However, Bombers coach Tony Price said he will not be taking the game lightly.
He was happy with his team’s performance last week, in particular their teamwork.
He will be looking to improve the team’s goal kicking ahead of this game.
Blue’s coach Brett Sherriff said the boys will learn from last week and strive to improve each week.
