From the opening whistle Traralgon Olympians and Sale United looked to attack and get on the scoreboard early in their Battle of Brittan Cup quarter final match on Sunday.
In the end-to-end affair Sale took the lead via a counter attack off an Olympians set piece.
The second half started at a much slower pace with Sale content to play counter attacking football.
United moved to a 2-0 lead via a tap in goal from a solid half valley.
This seemed to spring the travelling side into action and Olympians soon hit back from a quality strike from coach Anthony Pardo.
Sale moved ahead to a 3-1 lead via an Olympians own goal and then scored a fourth via a poor mistake in the Olympians’ defence.
The visitors continued to press and pegged another back via another Pardo strike, but it was too little, too late.
Churchill United v Monash
In a tense encounter Churchill United left it to extra time to overcome a defiant Monash side, 2-0.
Despite dominating play Churchill could not find a winner and missed some golden opportunities during regular time, including three chances cleared off the Monash goalline.
Coen Slaughter was looking dangerous for the Wolves on the counter attack but he was marshalled well by the solid Churchill defence headed up by Aiden Huizer.
Paul Riess had a goal disallowed for offside after finishing with an authoritative header as the match went to extra time. Attacking midfielder Taylor Jackson finally broke the deadlock three minutes into the first period of extra time after finishing a nice through ball from Riess.
The 2-0 result was secured when substitute Ben Skinner went on a run to slot the ball past Wolves custodian Ross Johnson after another great ball from Riess.
Churchill will play the winner of Traralgon City versus Moe United in August, after their match was postponed due to poor ground conditions.
In other games Fortuna 60 defeated Falcons 2000 5-2.
Preview
Monash hosts Traralgon City and will be out to continue its good league form.
Coen Slaughter has been in dominant form and the Wolves will be boosted by the return of Ty Christy who was cup tied at the weekend.
In their earlier encounter Monash and Traralgon City shared the points.
City will look to take advantage after the weeks break and get a win it last season at Monash Reserve.
