The AFL Gippsland Commission has appointed Travis Switzer as its inaugural region general manager.

Switzer is a highly regarded public servant in the region, with significant experience in the sport and leisure sector with the Wellington Shire Council and the Latrobe City Council.

AFL Gippsland Commission chair Angus Hume said Switzer had been selected from a strong field of candidates.

“Travis’ experience in dealing with local clubs, leagues and other stakeholders will be incredibly valuable to the AFL Gippsland Commission as we set about implementing a new strategic plan for football in the region,” Hume said.

The position was created after the AFL’s 2011 review of football in Country Victoria found a change of governance structures would provide a greater strategic focus, more effective decision making at a regional level and an investment in resources directly where they are needed most.

“Travis will report directly to the independent AFL Gippsland Commission and will strive to support all football stakeholders in the region to ensure they have the capacity to achieve sustainable growth,” Hume said.

“His role will be very strategic in nature and he will be responsible for the implementation and management of the direction of football in Gippsland.”

Switzer will begin on 11 November.
