Two Churchill women were recognised at the 2013 Regional Achievement and Community Awards on Saturday night.
Twenty-eight year-old Cassandra Anderson took out the Fantastic Furniture Indigenous Achievement Award.
Soon to graduate as a doctor in medicine, Ms Anderson is the youngest board member of the East Gippsland School of Aboriginal Health profession and is a student representative for Indigenous Monash University Students.
Dr Christine Lee won the GippsTAFE and University of Ballarat Regional Achiever Award.
Dr Lee teaches and researches management in the school of Business and Economics at Monash University Gippsland Campus.
In addition to achieving research grants to the value of $100,000, Dr Lee has made more than 50 conference presentations, publications and journal articles and serves as deputy chair of the Gippsland Ethnic Communities’ Council.
Mayoral election
Latrobe City councillors will tonight elect their new mayor.
Councillors are elected for four-year terms, but a mayor is voted in each year.
The public is welcome to attend the vote which will commence at 5.30pm at Latrobe City headquarters, Commercial Road, Morwell.
Merger concerns
A Latrobe City councillor’s motion, again raising concerns about the Monash University Gippsland Campus merger with the University of Ballarat, was defeated on Wednesday night.
Cr Christine Sindt sought to request urgent meetings with local members of parliament, along with Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne and Prime Minister Tony Abbott, to raise concerns about the campus’s proposed involvement with a United Nations Global Action Plan relating to food and energy security.
She said the Gippsland community had not been consulted on the matter.
The motion was defeated, six votes to three.
Tree removal
Road safety is scheduled to be improved along the Princes Highway Traralgon with the removal of trees.
From this week, works will be undertaken to remove all trees from the centre median between the traffic lanes, from the Traralgon Golf Course through to the traffic lights at Breed Street.
VicRoads will also replace existing rigid streetlight poles with new ones that absorb the impact of a crash.
