Be wary of fake phone calls

GIPPSLAND Water customers have been warned to be wary of fake phone calls from people posing as government representatives enquiring if they had received “water saving devices” from their local water authority.

Gippsland Water has recently received a number of calls from concerned customers regarding false over-the-phone requests, asking concerning questions that have no relevance to Gippsland Water’s operations.

Managing director David Mawer advised that from time to time Gippsland Water receives calls from customers concerned that they are being contacted by bogus operators claiming to represent either the government or Gippsland Water.

“Gippsland Water staff will always identify themselves whether face-to-face or on the phone, and I urge all customers to exercise caution if receiving phone calls from people claiming to be from the government and linked to Gippsland Water,” Mr Mawer said.
