A mining exploration licence application covering the Toongabbie area was approved by the Department of Primary Industries last week, freeing up the company to begin exploration for brown coal and other minerals in the area.
Mining operation, Commonwealth Mining, filed an application to the DPI in October, listing ‘coal bed methane’ along with brown and black coal as the commodities the company was interested in locating.
However the company amended its licence application last fortnight to exclude coal bed methane from its listed exploration targets amid heightened community concerns.
The exploration tenement covers 148 square kilometres stretching from north of Glengarry, through Toongabbie, into the Macalister Irrigation District.
