LATROBE Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested a 40 year-old Geelong man in Hazelwood North on Monday evening and charged him with deception valued about $150,000.

Police say the man befriended a Hazelwood North family and told them in exchange for them spending the money on his interests and items, aimed to benefit him, he would do some work for them.

The man has been remanded in custody and will face the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court next month.

Elderly man injured

A 76 year-old driver of a car was conveyed to Latrobe Regional Hospital yesterday morning with minor lacerations and possible spinal injuries after he was involved in a collision with a truck.

The incident occurred in Morwell around 8.20am, and police say the elderly driver, also from Morwell, was turning to Mid Valley Shopping Centre behind Bunnings Warehouse and failed to give way to a truck.

Police say the truck was only five metres away from the man when he pulled out at the intersection, resulting in the collision.

The driver of the truck was reportedly uninjured.

Burglars busted

TWO Morwell men have been arrested and charged for a series of burglaries on storage units in Morwell and Moe in late August.

The men, aged 23 and 30 years, allegedly stole household items and power tools, and were bailed to appear before the court at a later date.

Holiday-time thefts

VICTORIA Police has urged parents to be aware of their children’s actions over the school holidays as the number of thefts from shops, including milk bars, have been on the rise.

Youths charged

A 23 year-old man was arrested at a Moe address on Monday, while a 14 year-old Morwell girl was also apprehended by police in relation to an aggravated burglary on 26 September.

The two have been charged with aggravated burglary on a house in Hourigan Road, Morwell, where the duo also allegedly injured the occupant of the house, a 35 year-old man. Police are still investigating the incident, and say the pair are believed to be involved in a crime wave across Baw Baw Shire and Latrobe City in the last few months, including at least three thefts of motor vehicle and thefts from motor vehicle.

Investigators are also seeking the assistance of several others, including two 15 year-old girls and one 18 year-old girl, a 19 year-old man, two 16 year-old boys and one 15 year-old boy.

Gutsy victim

A GUTSY 39 year-old Morwell woman attempted to grab on to an unknown offender who broke into her Symons Crescent property shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

According to police, the victim was awoken by the sound of breaking glass, and entered an unoccupied bedroom where she found the offender attempting to climb out the window.

She then grabbed on to the offender’s leg, but the offender broke free and escaped.

Police are investigating the incident.

Powerlines down

TWO powerlines were down at the corner of Tramway and Boldings roads, Morwell, yesterday morning about 7.25am.

According to police, the powerlines had since been fixed, but the cause of the fallen powerlines is yet to be determined. Victoria Police was at the intersection directing traffic.
