Latrobe City Council will call on the Federal Government to intervene in the proposed merger of Monash University’s Gippsland campus and the University of Ballarat.
The council will write to Federal Tertiary Education Minister Chris Bowen requesting an urgent review of the move.
It follows a motion by councillor Darrell White to formally “condemn” Monash’s decision and request a face-to-face meeting with Monash University Vice Chancellor Ed Byrne.
Cr White described the Monash proposal as a “tragedy that needs to be explained”.
Some councillors encouraged Monash to move on, saying they wanted another major university to take its place.
“If Monash wants to walk away, then go. We don’t want you here,” Cr Kellie O’Callaghan said. For more read the Thursday’s issue of The Express.
