Drivers reminded to be alert following three deaths in three days

Latrobe Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to remain alert on the roads following three fatal collisions in three days last week.

Police are investigating whether alcohol or distraction were factors in a crash in the early hours of Thursday morning which killed a man aged in his 40s.

His car was discovered about 7.20am in a paddock off Middle Creek Road at Yinnar South which appeared to have crashed through trees and rolled, but police believe the collision may have occurred about 3am.

It followed Tuesday’s crash between a truck and a sedan at the intersection of Maryvale and Traralgon West roads, which killed a 52 year-old Traralgon woman.

Police are investigating whether driver distraction or a mobile phone were factors in the collision.

On Thursday night an 85 year-old Yarram woman died in the Alfred Hospital after she was a passenger in a car crash at Loy Yang on Tuesday afternoon.

About 5.15pm two cars collided at the intersection of Mattingly Hill and Traralgon Creek roads.

The 90 year-old driver, also from Yarram, remains in the Alfred in a stable condition, while the 30 year-old Traralgon man who the drove the second vehicle was not injured.

The deaths bring Latrobe’s 2013 road toll to seven.

“It only takes a moment of inattention and you could be in a lot of trouble,” Sergeant Clint Wilson said.

“We are also encouraging people to buy cars fitted with curtain airbags.

“(Without them) 50 kilometres an hour into the driver’s side door is enough to kill you.”

Anybody with information about any of the incidents should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
