State Member for Morwell Russell Northe has encouraged local businesses to evolve in order to remain competitive in an online world.
While prompting Latrobe Valley residents to shop in their local stores, Mr Northe said there were things businesses could do to help themselves.
“Over the past five to 10 years the way that people shop has changed considerably and it’s imperative that businesses evolve and understand what their customers want and how they shop,” Mr Northe said.
“In other words, I encourage small businesses to look at opportunities to provide their products online and to market in a way that is attractive to consumers.”
Mr Northe also said workshops, information and support were available for business-owners to help their operations grow.
“While I appreciate many business owners spend a considerable amount of time running and improving their business already, it’s important to look out for opportunities, information and events that are out there.”
Mr Northe said visiting Business Victoria’s website was a great place to start, with many articles on how to start, run and expand businesses, as well as information about upcoming events and workshops.
“I would encourage businesses to subscribe to Business Victoria’s monthly newsletter, which talks about opportunities, many of which occur in our region,” Mr Northe said.
However, he said as much government had a role to play in assisting small businesses, it was important for consumers to consider where they spent their money.
“I ask shoppers to look at where they are spending their money and to shop locally first and foremost, support businesses which employ our local people and assist our local economy and support local sporting clubs and community groups.”
