Callous punch

Police have described a coward punch, which left a 27 year-old Hazelwood North man in the Alfred Hospital with swelling on the brain, as a “callous attack”.

According to police, the victim was in Watkins Court, Traralgon about 11.30pm on Friday after a neighbourhood dispute.

“A male attended in a vehicle, has hopped out and without any provocation has king hit the (victim), knocking him unconscious,” Senior Constable Shannon Murray said.

He said the victim was taken to the Alfred Hospital, where he has since woken after sustaining a broken jaw and swelling on the brain.

“It’s a callous attack on a defenceless individual,” Snr Const Murray said.

“People need to think before they act and they don’t realise one punch can have such an effect on one person’s life as well as their family.

“There was nil said between the parties; he (the offender) has got out of the car, punched him in the face, got back in the car and left.”

Snr Const Murray said it was believed the victim resolved the neighbourhood dispute prior to the incident.

Prior to going to print yesterday afternoon, police were yet to make any arrests.

They wish to speak to 22 year-old Traralgon man Mark Treadgold to assist with their enquiries.

Any witnesses to the incident who have not yet spoken to police are urged to phone the Morwell Criminal Investigation Unit on 5131 5000, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
