Poultry farm saved

Sunday’s fire posed the biggest threat to the Lyndale Poultry Farm in its 50 years of operation.

Fire came within three metres of the poultry sheds, which house 300,000 birds who supply eggs across Victoria and interstate.

CFA firefighters were on hand to save the Maryvale Road operation, for which business owner Laurie Powter will be forever grateful.

“We thank them very much for their services, we couldn’t have managed without them,” Mr Powter said.

The farm was able to offer up water supplies from its two million litre dam to the CFA, and as part of its fire plan, ran the farm on generators during Sunday’s power outage.

Mr Powter said as the result of cooling pads in the poultry sheds, the chickens were unharmed by the smoky conditions.

The business has maintained operations, but counter sales have been limited as a result of a road block, which was still in place yesterday.
