Whittakers Road to close for upgrade

Whittakers Road in Traralgon will close from Monday until the end of June for repairs to the flood-damaged surface.

The works will include the replacement of the existing flexible pavement with a concrete surface as well as replacement of the old guardrail, while the pedestrian footpaths will be widened and drainage works completed.

“Over the years, as Whittakers Road is prone to flooding the pavement has deteriorated, traffic load has also created additional damage,” Latrobe City mayor Dale Harriman said.

“The new pavement will be built to better withstand the conditions of the area and will result in a safer path for pedestrians.”

There will be a detour in place to access the Traralgon central business district by heading east along Howitt Street then turning left onto Liddiard Road and left again onto the Princes Highway. Alternatively, drivers can access the CBD by heading west along Shakespeare Street then right at the roundabout onto the Princes Highway.

There will be signposts in place.

“The general advice for motorists is to be patient during times of heavier traffic or to avoid the area if at all possible,” Cr Harriman said.

“We understand there will be some disruption during the period of the closure but being able to prepare the road to better withstand future flood events will no doubt save us long-term inconvenience.”
