Linking up through proactive portal

High school students seeking to link up with Gippsland businesses to complete work experience now have access to a local online booking portal.

The Gippsland Student Placement Portal was officially launched on Tuesday after a 12-month trial phase.

Businesses can register with the portal for free, notifying students and schools what sort of work placement jobs they can offer and when.

“I give all the employers the placement dates of all the schools in our region,” Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network workplace learning coordinator Michelle Weatherall said.

“The employers can be proactive about the placement.”

Simon Parsons & Co Lawyers manager John Ellingham, whose workplace took part in the trial, said the portal replaced the need for students to phone the office with work placement requests.

“You can put all the information in so the students understand what they’re going into and once that’s done, then maintaining it takes maybe an hour every month, if that,” Mr Ellingham said.

Currently 28 schools and 46 organisations across Gippsland have signed up to the portal.

For more information on the portal, or to register, phone the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network on 5633 2868.
