Works of art in Tyers

COLOURFUL and thought-provoking artwork from Latrobe Valley and beyond will brighten Tyers this weekend as the community hosts its annual art festival.

More than 590 entries from 190 artists will be showcased at the event, with 13 entries coming from the United States.

Tyers Art Festival director Peter Harrison said he was pleased with the huge response to this year’s festival.

“There are some amazing pieces that I am sure will interest visitors to the exhibition,” he said.

Now in its 36th year, the exhibition will celebrate a variety of art mediums including oil, photography, mixed media, scratch art and watercolours.

This year will also include the addition of a scratch prize section, featuring a $200 prize, along with a Melrossa Art Studio Scholarship and an Inspirational Award up for grabs.

Mr Harrison said the festival allowed artists to showcase and receive recognition for their work.

“In recent years the Tyers Art Festival has been reinvigorated with thousands of people visiting the festival every year, so it is a great opportunity for artists to put their art on display,” he said.

All entries will be judged prior to the exhibition with the winners announced at the gala opening event tomorrow night.

The exhibition will continue on Saturday and Sunday at the Tyers Hall, while Sunday will also include a family fun day with a jumping castle, face painting and fairy floss, along with a craft market at the school.
