Energy operator AGL has confirmed members of the Electrical Trades Union went on a one-hour strike at Loy Yang A on Christmas Day.

“This is a very significant escalation of the bargaining dispute,” Loy Yang general manager Steve Rieniets said.

“Three working days notice does not allow enough time, should it be necessary to safely wind down the power station.”

Mr Rieniets warned AGL was considering “all of its options” including employer response action authorised under the Fair Work Act. It follows the CFMEU calling a 24-hour work stoppage on 28 December, but later abandoning the strike after the operator announced it would lock out the workforce.

The State Government also made an application to the Fair Work Commission to terminate the action concerned about the threat to Victoria’s power supply.

Prior to the action, ETU Gippsland organiser Peter Mooney said unions were ramping up their protected industrial action to secure an agreement with AGL.

Unions and AGL are still disputing an enterprise bargaining agreement at the FWC, with AGL pushing to terminate the agreement.
