Sick man calls for ban on parked cars

Moe resident Kevin Oakley is calling on Latrobe City to put ‘no parking’ signs and markings in front of the house opposite his so he can exit his driveway and be transported to hospital quickly when his serious health issue flares up.

Mr Oakley, who suffers from polycystic kidney disease and has been on dialysis for more than two decades, said council workers started installing the signs but never finished the job.

Mr Oakley suffered a burst fistula six weeks ago and cars parked opposite his driveway made it difficult to get out to get to hospital.

“The police won’t do anything [about cars parked opposite the driveway] because there are no signs,” he said.

“It is my life [at risk].”

Latrobe City Council general manager infrastructure and recreation Steve Piasente said council had committed to installing a trial parking restriction at the house to address the issue.

“Latrobe City Council has been working with the residents in the street to help assist with emergency vehicle access … due to the resident’s serious health condition,” he said.

“The line marking and signage will be installed as part of the current construction project that is scheduled for completion in around three weeks.”

“The asphalt has been placed, however some rework is required at the one end of the street [which] may delay the line marking until then. Council will progress the work as soon as possible.”
