Music bellowed through Moe Plaza on Thursday during World Make Music Day as students from Elizabeth Street Primary School demonstrated their talents behind the instruments.
The school was one of several organisations which participated in the inaugural event with the support of the Latrobe City Community Concert Band who performed a number of well-known arrangements.
The Coal Valley Male Chorus and several other local musicians and groups took part in the event last week.
More than 800 cities across 120 countries participated in the annual event which originated in France in 1982 as the Fete de la Musique and now coincides with a national holiday for the country.
Elizabeth Street Primary School principal Ian Frost said it was a celebration of music from around the world and inclusive of people of all talents and abilities.
“Every kind of musician – young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbours, and strangers,” Mr Frost said.
“For the Elizabeth Street Primary School Music Performance Group it was a great thrill to be able to take part. Ten children from grades 4 through to 6 represented the school and brought their music to the stage.
“The children sang and played xylophones, metallophones, African drums and a wide range of un-tuned percussion instruments. It was an exciting opportunity for the children.”
While students were nervous before the performance, Mr Frost said the their lunch-time rehearsals had paid off.
“The children put on a wonderful performance and were delighted that they could contribute to brightening up their community,” he said.
Year 12 Lowanna College student Noah Koschade also wowed crowds with his performance on the keyboard.
