An accidental planting has yielded big results for avid Traralgon gardener Andy Charalambous.
The retiree recently harvested 14 giant butternut pumpkins, the largest weighing in at a hefty 10.6 kilograms.
Mr Charalambous set out to plant zucchinis in late November but the seeds he chose from his vast collection turned out to be the butternut beauties.
“We didn’t realise until they came up pumpkins,” Mr Charalambous said.
He said water alone was the key to his garden’s success and the pumpkins’ size had not taken away from their taste.
“They’re very sweet,” Mr Charalambous said.
Those that have not been given away to friends and family will go into traditional Greek pumpkin pies, soups and roasts.
