Council to consider Hazelwood North battery plant next week

Michelle Slater

Latrobe City Council will decide on whether to approve a controversial used lead acid battery recycling pant at Hazelwood North at a special council meeting on Thursday, September 17 at 6pm.

The agenda for the meeting will be made public from 2pm on Friday and can be viewed on Latrobe City’s website.

This comes as the Environment Protection Authority recently granted a Works Approval for Chunxing to build the facility at Fourth Road.

The special council meeting will not be held in person to due COVID-19 restrictions, but participation will be held via video link and can be viewed live from council’s website or Facebook page.

Public participants must register to speak to the open agenda item before noon on the meeting day.

Chunxing is proposing to process 50,000 tonnes of used lead acid batteries into 28,000 tonnes of refined lead each year.

The proposal has garnered strong community opposition with fears of potential lead contamination.
