Another part of Morwell’s coal mining history will come tumbling down next week when the last Hazelwood dredger gets demolished.
Hazelwood dredger nine is scheduled to be demolished on Thursday between 10am and 11am, subject to suitable weather conditions.
An ENGIE spokesman warned that locals may hear loud noise for a couple of seconds, although controls had been put in place to reduce external noise.
He said the demolition will not be visible to the community because the dredger is within the mine.
The dredger will be knocked down by explosive cutting charges, designed to achieve an engineered controlled explosive collapse.
Demolition crew assessed that this was the safest method to due to the dredger’s size.
This signals Hazelwood’s third and last dredger to be knocked down with explosives, following last year’s demolition of dredgers 11 and 10.
Dredgers 24 and 25 had been demolished mechanically as they were smaller pieces of mining equipment.
The demolition program is being undertaken by the Australian demolition company Delta Group as part of the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project.
