The pong stays for winter
THE APM “pong” will continue to offend Latrobe Valley noses for yet another winter. There’ll be no respite this year, with the APM chemical recovery plant, costing $16 million, well behind schedule. According to APM resident district manager, Mr Barassi, it should be fully functional in about six months. “At the moment the plant is undergoing trials, and we are now in the process of commissioning the plant,” he said yesterday. The main job of the plant is to minimise the smell and dust from the Maryvale pulp mill. Tests on the stainless steel clad plant were supposed to start last September, and the plant was supposed to become fully operational about now.

New member vows to make LV a key priority
NEW member-elect for McMillian Russell Broadbent says he will work to ensure the Latrobe Valley becomes a premier region in Victoria. As his first pledge as the member-elect, Mr Broadbent said he wanted to make sure the Latrobe Valley received “its fair share of the national cake”. Mr Broadbent has won the seat of McMillian for the Coalition, ousting Labor’s Barry Cunningham after just one term. With almost 85 per cent of the vote counted, the Liberal candidate holds a two-candidate-preferred lead of more than four per cent over Mr Cunningham. In an interview with the Express, Mr Broadbent admitted he was “stunned” at the national result. “It is over and above anything I expected. This isn’t a landslide, it is a cake-walk,” he claimed.

Traf blaze safe
CFA crews were still patrolling the site of a grassfire yesterday that burnt up to six hectares in Trafalgar East. After receiving the call about 1.30pm Monday, nine tankers and additional crew attended the scene, gaining control of the fire about 4.30pm that day. The fire was eventually declared safe at 3:40pm.
