Gippsland wants a freeway
A MEETING of nine Gippsland municipalities of Drouin on Monday formed a four-man executive committee to fight for the upgrading of the Princes Highway.
Traralgon City councillor Rod Dunbar is the Latrobe Valley representative on the committee.
The other committee members are Cr Russell (Pakenham), Warragul Shire Engineer, Mr Langdon, and Cr Kirk (Buln Buln).
The committee will prepare and put forward a case to the State Government, urging it to increase its planned spending on the Princes Highway.
Monday’s meeting lasted for two hours and was attended by municipal representatives from the shires of Morwell, Traralgon, Narracan, Bulb Buln, Warragul and Pakenham and the cities of Traralgon, Moe and Berwick.
The meeting was told that the State Government was considering an increase in car registration early next year and that this would have a vital effect on any increased spending on the Princes Highway.
It was considered that the Princes Highway should be a freeway from Traralgon through to Melbourne, considering the large Loy Yang project proposed for the Traralgon area.

Liquor sales are up
THE Morwell Club is justifiably proud of its performance in the liquor sales stakes over the past year, as documented last week by Liquor Licence Commission (LLC) statistics.
Club manager Andrew Phillips attributes the lift in sales to a coinciding membership increase of around 11,000 over the past year and, generally, “more heads in the door”.
While more than 350 fully licensed clubs operate in country Victoria, each year the top 50 liquor sellers from that group are listed by the LLC.
Over the past four years the Morwell Club has consistently earned a place in the top 10, along with several other local clubs, but this year hit a new high by rating number two.
Second only to regular number one placegetter, the Mildura Workingman’s Club, the Morwell Club is “trading stronger than last year”, according to its manager.
The Traralgon RSL Club also gained a sixth placing on the Commission’s list, while the Moe RSL sub-branch, Traralgon Bowls Club and Morwell Falcons Soccer Club all appeared in the top 20.

That’s the ticket
A WORKPLACE syndicate of 36 power station co-workers in the Latrobe Valley made the shocking discovery on Tuesday that their shared TattsLotto ticket in the weekend’s draw won a division on prize worth $684,477.
Tatts was able to phone the syndicate leader of the shift-workers with the news they had cracked division one because their winning TattsLotto ticket was registered to a Tatts Card.
The syndicate leader explained the syndicate was long-standing and had been running since the 90s.
The syndicate of Latrobe Valley power station workers, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased the division one wining 12-game marked TattsLotto entry from Trafalgar Authorised Newsagency.
“It’s great news. It’s so exciting. It wasn’t that long ago that we were celebrating selling our division one winning entry,” Trafalgar Authorised Newsagency owner Jenny Evison said.
“It was only this time last year in September that we sold a $750,000 winning TattsLotto ticket, and in october 2013 we sold a TattsLotto ticket that won $803,000.”
