Big numbers for swim

The Hazelwood Open Water Championship is set to make a splash on the weekend at Hazelwood Pondage.

The annual event will include the state championship 10 kilometre and 5km events plus the shorter distance 2.5km and 1km races.

One hundred and twenty-five swimmers are set to contest the 5km event and a record 29 swimmers have registered to tackle the 10km course.

Both of these events allow participants to achieve qualifying times for the national championships in February.

Entries for the 1km and the 2.5km races will be allowed on the day with registration from 10.45am to 12.15pm.

On Saturday morning Australian open water coach Greg Towele will be on hand to run a clinic for novice open water swimmers.

More than 60 youngsters between 11 and 13 years have signed up for the clinic, which will be presented by Swimming Victoria and Swimming Australia at no cost.

Race entries on the day cost $45 and medals will be awarded in the 2.5km and the 1km for 10 to 12 years, 13 to 15 years, 16 to 19 years, 20 to 29 years, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years, 50 to 59 years and 60 years plus.

The event is supported by the Latrobe Valley Yacht Club and Surf Lifesaving clubs from Seaspray, Lakes Entrance and Woodside.

The Hazelwood Pondage will be closed to the public during the event
