Bowls
MOE Bowling Club’s Latrobe City Classic Ladies Pairs had an aptly named St Patrick’s Day winner in Bev Luck on Sunday, after the Yallourn bowler dominated the greens alongside Bairnsdale’s Joanne Martin over the weekend.
The duo went undefeated throughout the two-day competition, recording five wins and one draw, against Bendigo’s Carol McEwan and Jean Cunningham, to claim the coveted classic crown.
Former Yallourn bowler Martin, whose husband is the greenskeeper at Moe, reunited with old pennant partner Luck to great effect and said their combination’s consistency was the key to success.
“We bowled well (and) we were consistent all weekend,” she said.
“We’ve played a little bit together… it was great to come down and play with Bev and play against people I’ve previously played against and it was a good competition with some great bowls,” she said.
The maiden Moe classic win for the Luck and Martin connection saw defending champions, mother-daughter team, Danielle and Lisa Phillips, relegated to fourth while second and third places were filled out by Jaye Allen-Dayle (San Remo) and Pam Wintrup (Wonthaggi), and Rosa James (Phillip Island) and Marilyn Forrest (San Remo) respectively.
Martin said it was a “fantastic” feeling to walk away with first place, and that playing in Moe was a memorable experience.
“They do a fantastic job with their organising, catering and greens staff,” she said.
A full field of 28 teams took to the greens for the event and had to adapt to a heavier surface yesterday after 20 millimetres of overnight rain.
Tournament organiser Chris O’Rielly said the quality of field was on par with previous years and the competition was carried out in excellent spirits.
