Weather takes its toll

THE heat was the winner on the day at Traralgon women’s tennis last Tuesday, when 35 degree temperatures forced a series of forfeits.

Despite all sets being reduced, only two of the five matches were completed.

Beech and Myrtle had a close yellow division contest in which the latter held a slender two game lead with two sets to play.

The final sets were shared with three set winner, SallyAnne Bahuth for Beech, partnering with Debbie Albanese to take the set 6-3.

Myrtle had no trouble holding the last set, taking it 6-2.

The final score was three sets all, but Myrtle won with 28 games to Beech’s 24.

Ash started off strong and won the first three sets from Willow.

Willow team member Bev Robinson succumbed to the heat and was forced to forfeit her last two sets.

Ash completed the day by taking the six sets on offer.

The match between Elm and Oak was a casualty of the heat with only four sets completed.

Elm was on top when play stopped.

The two last set points were shared giving Elm a comfortable five set, 25 games win over Oak, one set 17 games.

The only other completed match was in green division, where Gum held off Bay.

Barb Smith beat the heat and her opponents to win all three sets.

The final score was Gum four sets and 29 games defeated Bay, two sets, 23 games.

Elder and Maple’s match was a topsy turvy affair with two set forfeits in the middle of the match, and points shared.

The result went Maple’s way, four sets 23 games to Elder two sets, 10 games.
