TRARALGON basketballers Jack White and Danni Pearce have returned from the under 18 national championships in Queensland with heads held high.
Their Victoria Country teams finished runner-up in the girls’ division after a three-point loss to Queensland in the gold medal game, while the boys lost the bronze medal playoff to Tasmania 65-50.
Queensland North came out firing in the girls’ gold medal match and at the end of the first period held a comfortable 11-point lead.
In the second and third quarters the Victorian girls blitzed the boards and outscored their opponents at each break to set up a final quarter show down.
Despite its best efforts Victoria Country was unable to break Queensland’s defences, as both teams shot 14 points apiece for a final scoreline of 55-52.
Danni led the scoring for Victoria in the final with 15 points.
Jack and Danni were instrumental in Victoria Country’s success throughout the tournament.
Danni averaged 10.3 points per game and 4.3 assists, while Jack managed 7.3 ppg and 6.4 rebounds.
Consistent scoring efforts saw Danni register double figures against South Australia metro, Western Australia metro and Queensland North twice on the eight-game schedule, with a competition high of 19.
Jack posted his best numbers against the Northern Territory with 17 points and six rebounds, and managed four blocks in the bronze medal game.
The championships were held from 20-28 April.
