Rolling on to a bocce classic

CALABRIA Club took out the Latrobe City Bocce Classic Mixed Triples Championships held at the Italian-Australian Club in Morwell at the weekend.

Calabria defeated last year’s winners, Freccia Azzurra Club, in the grand final, with Morwell Bocce Club coming in third and fourth place.

“Calabria have been competing almost since the competition began and they have finally taken it out,” Morwell Bocce Club spokesperson Maria Maselli said.

“It was good for the club for them to finally get through to the end.”

On the Morwell club’s performance at the competition, Maselli said while they were yet to win the major prize, they were getting closer.

“We went very well; three of the Morwell teams got through to the semi finals and two of the teams made it to the grand final,” she said.

“More importantly these events have helped put Morwell on the map, and one of the visiting players, who is the president of the bocce federation, said if only the Melbourne clubs had the same level of support as we did here then the Melbourne clubs would be a lot bigger.

She said much of the support for the Morwell club came from the Italian-Australian Club.

The Morwell club will next compete in inter-club matches, the first against Whitehorse Club in August and then Kyabram in September.
