Sunday shift for Gippsland League

THIS year’s Gippsland League preliminary and grand finals have been shifted to Sunday.

League president Chris Soumilas said the switch from traditional Saturday matches was an opportunity to attract larger crowds and avoid clashing with other leagues’ finals series.

“The preliminary final we moved to a Sunday because there’s Alberton League, North Gippy, and Ellinbank and District Footy League play their grand finals on those Saturdays,” he said.

“We thought we’d move it to a Sunday because it gives people an opportunity to go to those grand finals and hopefully the next day they want to come and have another footy fix at our preliminary final.”

“For a seven day rest… we moved the grand final to a Sunday (when) we won’t have any opposition at all.”

Soumilas said it would also accommodate Saturday workers and those travelling to Melbourne based AFL fixtures.

The preliminary final will be held on 15 September and the grand final 22 September.
