GLENGARRY stamped itself as a genuine premiership contender with a commanding win over the reigning premier Ex Students in Saturday’s second day of round seven Neilson Builders Cup matches.
Centrals secured an unlikely six points with a second innings outright win over Churchill.
This round’s batting fireworks were provided by English recruit Alex Butler, who led Imperials to a great win with a magnificent 130.
Ex Students v Glengarry
NEEDING 180 to win the Sharks capitulated to be bundled out for 129.
The form of Lee Stockdale (7) and Greg Munro (8) was always going to be crucial in the chase and once Glengarry secured their wickets the game was in hand.
Sixteen year-old Jackson McMahon’s defiant 51 was superb as he tried to steer his side close to the target.
Rory Hare (22) and Jim Pryde (26) both made starts but could not go on as Glengarry secured a brilliant win.
Steve Wright (3/39) and Frank Marks (3/4) were the Magpies’ best.
Batting a second time Glengarry finished the day at 3/105.
The win saw the Pies rocket into third position while the Sharks tumbled to fifth.
CATS v Imperials
IMPS required a further 155 to win and scored a fantastic confidence booster with a season high 264.
Leading the way was English recruit Butler, who scored his maiden Traralgon and District century – a match winning 130.
He was supported well by Mat Ross (40), while Zac Tactor (23) and Joel Randall (22) also contributed.
Best for CATS was Conor Sloyan and Ryan Foulkes who each claimed three wickets.
Centrals v Churchill
CENTRALS came from behind to snatch an improbable second innings win following a low scoring day last week.
The unlikely victory came off the bats of Dean Rode, who made a glorious 111, and Al Campbell (35) as Centrals declared at 7/176.
Dan McKenna’s four wickets and Ryan Ayers’ three took the honours for Churchill.
With 43 overs left in the day Churchill was left a target of 173 to win outright.
In a sensational climax Centrals secured victory in the 42nd, leaving the Cobras stranded on 159.
Ben Kearns again showed his class, making 66 to take his season aggregate to over 500 runs.
Marc Fenech took five wickets and Corey Pollard three to be best for Centrals.
The win keeps Centrals in the hunt for fourth spot while Churchill, with four points, is still second on the ladder.
Toongabbie v Gormandale
WITH first innings points already secured, Gormandale started day two looking for time in the middle.
After 54 overs the Tigers declared at 8/179 and both teams had an early day.
Rob Darby top scored with 51 with support from Stu Anderson (35), Adrian Burgiel (34) and Kade Joske (25).
Tom Shippen capped off a good match for the Rams with 3/28.
Traralgon West v Rovers
Another 46 runs was all Rovers required to win and the chase never looked in any doubt.
Dean Gillard with 44, Simon Duff (36) and Todd Mann (43) all chimed in to help Rovers reach 8/176 declared.
Adam Thow and Richard Halloran each took three wickets.
Batting a second time Traralgon West was much better and finished the day on 6/177.
Jon Bell (74) and Ben Edebohls (37) were the best of the batsmen.
