LAWN BOWLS
IN a bid to address dwindling lawn bowls membership, the West Gippsland Bowls Association debuted its youth development program at Yallourn earlier this month.
Targeting lawn bowlers in the under 18 age bracket, the new program attracted six players to the launch for a two-hour session under the tuition of esteemed coach Lorraine Steel.
The attendees, aged between 13 and 15, are being groomed to form a youth team to challenge other regions such as South Gippsland.
WGBA chair Mal Grant said he hoped numbers would continue to grow at future training days.
“There’s been quite a fall off over the last few years with people not participating… this is a means of getting kids involved and playing sport,” Grant said.
“The good thing about bowls is you don’t have to be an ‘athlete’ to play the game.”
Both genders were represented on the day.
The next session will be held at Traralgon Bowls Club on 19 January.
