YALLOURN’S quest for a fourth consecutive West Gippsland Bowls division one pennant title was extinguished by Trafalgar in the elimination final at Traralgon on Saturday.
Trafalgar won three of four rinks to emerge 100-85 victors, depite a resilient Yallourn foursome led by Ken Capper taking the honours on rink two, 33-23.
Yallourn president Spencer Goss said it was disappointing to break the winning streak, but acknowledged his troops were outplayed on the day in a rain-affected fixture.
“Traf performed really well and outbowled us in a lot of ways,” Goss said.
“When the rain came and the greens slowed down, it didn’t help at all.
“We were going for four-years-in-a-row and I think the longer it goes the harder it gets because teams seem to build up each year… the competition has been pretty strong.”
Traralgon accounted for Morwell Club in the qualifying final by 10 shots in an encounter that came down to one blowout rink at Yallourn.
Two rinks were separated by single shot margins, while Morwell Club’s Wayne Lynch managed a four-shot advantage over Glenn Scott to tip the balance against Traralgon.
While both sides ultimately won two rinks apiece, James Scullin’s 33 to 19 defeat of Michael Yacoub’s men proved the difference in a 100-90 final scoreline.
Morwell Club skip Ian Kirkup, whose rink suffered a 23-22 loss to Chris Ward, said it was a tough loss to take, but the club was keen to make amends this weekend against Trafalgar in the preliminary final.
“It was a disappointing loss for us, having had three rinks that were fairly good,” Kirkup said.
“We’re happy to have another chance, every day is different and you’ve just got to be on song on the day.
“I think it’s an even battle, you start every Saturday afresh and let the best side win.”
Morwell Club now faces Trafalgar at Yallourn this Saturday for a grand final berth.
