LAWN BOWLS
WEST GIPPSLAND
TRARALGON extended its lead at the top of the West Gippsland Bowls division one ladder on Saturday with victory over second placed Yallourn.
Guns were holstered on both sides with Chris Le Lievere (Traralgon) and George Lambos (Yallourn) both missing from their respective sides for the top of the table encounter.
The Traralgon team of Scott Gillespie, Geoff Marriott, Ross Sizeland and Chris Ward were drawn to play the Yallourn’s Spencer Goss, Barry Daley, Neal Houston and Allan Grub.
The first five ends were neck and neck; Ward’s rink held a comfortable lead before Grubb’s men closed the gap to 10-11 by the break.
After tea Ward’s team drew away to a 27-17 rink victory.
The Traralgon quartet of Geoff Cole, Ian Hilsley, James Scullin and Matt Ferrari met John Arnold, Tony Knipping, Jim Lawrence and Kevin Lawrence in a match which was locked at 11 all after 12 ends.
Ferrari’s foursome hit the fast lane after tea to win five ends straight and seal the match 30-15.
Austin Gapper, Will McIlwain, Michael Yacoub and Ian Kirkup of Traralgon drew Max Grubb, John Hannant, Charlie Ward and Alex Houstin of Yallourn.
After seven ends Houston’s team led 8-1 before a resilient Kirkup and company pegged them back to 9-all.
The lead fluctuated back and forth in a gripping contest, before young first year skipper Houstin led his charges to a one shot win, 25-24.
Traralgon’s Vin McIlwain, Phil Mustoe, Abe Roeder and Scott Cottrell had a tough battle with Yallourn’s Nosha Michaels, John Backman, Peter Philips and Ken Capper on the final rink.
After an even start Capper’s team bolted away to a 13-7 lead, however Kiwi skipper Cottrell, a new member to the Traralgon Bowls Club, rustled his team into action to record a 29-21 win.
A magic eight was recorded on the 23rd end to tip the scales in his favour.
A tight tussle at tea time transformed into a comfortable 110-78 shot and 18 points for Traralgon by the close of play.
There were no great surprises in other division one ties.
Traralgon RSL had a close 88-82 win against Warragul, Moe was too good for Drouin, winning 100-87 and Morwell Club accounted for premier Trafalgar 96-76.
In over 60s state pairs action, Shirley Whitechurch and Pat Trewin scored a two shot win in the region final.
The men’s final will be played today at Morwell Club.
