LAWN BOWLS
YALLOURN posted a hard-fought seven shot victory over Morwell Club in testing windy conditions at Yallourn on Saturday.
In a match that rocked back and forth all afternoon, Yallourn led narrowly at the tea break and consolidated late in the piece to score an important win.
The home side did not have it all its own way as Ron Witton’s Morwell Club rink of Deric Hewling, Phil Wynd and Don Harle blazed out to a 29-3 lead after 15 ends.
While George Lambos and his teammates Vin Birchall, Charlie Ward and Alex Houston outscored the visitor 10-8 over the final 10 ends, the result was a resounding 37-13 rink win for Morwell Club.
The joy ended there for Morwell though, with Yallourn saluting on the other three rinks.
Kevin Lovett’s rink fought back from an early deficit to bury Rod Smith 30-17, while Ken Capper stormed to an early lead and never looked back in a 26-20 win over Ryan Marston.
The other rink saw Alan Grubb’s Yallourn quartet of Alan Ryan, Barry Daley and Neale Houston trade shot for shot with Dave Stevens, Mil Karleusa, Glenn Trembath and Peter Randall early.
Grubb won eight out of 10 ends after tea to go away to a 22-10 lead.
With Yallourn ahead by four at the start of the last end Grubb’s team got a three to hand the club a resolute overall victory by seven shots.
In other division one matches Traralgon had a comfortable win against Drouin 95-76, Trafalgar is back in the fold with a big 114-82 win against Traralgon RSL and Warragul recorded its first win by defeating Moe 95-87.
