Traralgon not troubled by Warragul

Warragul went into its West Gippsland bowls match against Traralgon quietly confident of a victory.

If Warragul was victorious in its division one match there was a possibility it could claim a finals berth.

However, Traralgon surprised its opponents and recorded a comfortable 105 to 75 shot win overall with three rinks up and one rink down; not the result Warragul was seeking.

Warragul’s hopes of contesting the premiership ended with the loss.

Last year’s premiers, and dark horse, Trafalgar snuck into the four after recording a 28-shot victory against Moe.

Despite missing out on finals in division one, Warragul is a contender for the division three and four premiership.

Traralgon are contenders for premierships in divisions one, five and six.

Women’s round robin

A team of 12 women selected from West Gippsland bowls clubs journeyed to Meeniyan to compete for the Round Robin Shield against South Gippsland on Friday.

Three games of 10 ends were played and the final score of 82-80, in favour of West Gippsland, was indicative of the tightness of the game.

At the end of the day’s play and the presentation of the shield to West Gippsland, a selected team of 12 players and one reserve was announced by match committee chair Dulcie Mortlock.

The team will represent the Strzelecki Region at the Region Championships at Murray Downs Bowls Club on the 18 and 19 March.

The team

West Gippsland – Lorraine Steel, Maureen Leighton, Denise Hamilton, Kaye Garry, Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Joan Goldie, Danielle Phillips and Margaret Ratcliffe (reserve).

South Gippsland – Jenny Millar, Trisch McCormick, Robyn Dennis, Marjie Pearson and Marilyn Forrest.

Strzelecki State Championships

The Strzelecki State Championships will be played at Leongatha Bowls Club on Sunday.

The West Gippsland state finalists will compete against South Gippsland to see who will represent the Strzelecki Region at the Bowls Victoria State Championships in Bendigo during the week of 18 to 24 April.
