Babolat and Adidas show finals form

Top of the table Babolat and title contender Adidas enter the Traralgon Tuesday women’s tennis finals in red hot form after solid victories in the 15th and final round of the regular season last week.

Another crushing performance from Babolat underscored its premiership credentials in the form of a five sets to one triumph over a plucky Prince lineup.

The opening set came down to a tiebreaker which Prince’s Anne Bishop and Carolyn Johnson held on to win, but Babolat exacted protracted revenge to claim the next five in a row.

Babolat’s Cathryn Brougham, Jan Cadwallader, Florence Martin and Lorna Wood showed flawless form to help their side win 5-1, 47 games to 16.

Adidas too showed it will be a finals threat with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Dunlop, which was more competitive than the final score suggested.

Dunlop’s Sue Timms had a great match against Megan Agostino but she could not pull off an upset as the latter went on to win all three of her ties for the day.

Nicki Townsend and Robina May won Dunlop’s only set for the day in an 8-3 rubber.

Adidas’s Anne Fleming played fantastic tennis, taking her three sets off Michale McDonald.

Wendy Moore and Val Kennedy also shone as Adidas won 5-1, 43 games to 27.

After a series of upset results Wilson stood tall to repel Yonnex.

Yonnex offered a stern challenge with Barb Smith, who has stepped up to the number one slot this season, colliding with Gillian VanIwaarden in a tense battle.

Amanda Dawson, who recently returned to the competition, fought hard against Jenny Meredith – occupying the number two position due to an injury.

Heidi Devlin of Yonnex worked hard, winning two of her sets, but Marrisca Seinen held on to the third.

Wilson’s Tanya Goodwin had a great day taking her three sets, as her side won out 4-2 (38-30).

Puma’s Sharon Cummings, fill-in Helen Paulet, Marg Carpenter and Miwako Inagi enjoyed a convincing win over Nike in the final match of the round, 6-0 (48-21).

Player of the week was Anne Fleming.

Finals will take place over the next fortnight.
