Brave family unites

A rare family affair underscored the Churchill Braves’ big victory over Morwell in Latrobe Valley baseball last weekend, when three generations of the Gill family combined on the diamond.

Coming out of a nine year retirement this season, 62 year-old Jack Gill joined 39 year-old Shane Gill and 14 year-old Brad Gill, playing in his first senior game, to complete the family trifecta.

Jack played 245 games in a career spanning 1987 to 2006, was awarded life membership in 2000 and held the secretary role for many years.

Now 39, Shane began playing t-ball as a junior before joining the senior team in 1991.

The former club president has played 339 games, earned life membership in 2014, and held the Braves together through some lean years.

His efforts were rewarded on a personal level last round, when Brad stepped up to the top grade to join the Gill brigade.

Brad has played t-ball since the age of six and is assistant coach to the club’s under 13 side.

The Gills capped off a celebratory day with a 23-4 win over Morwell.
