TRARALGON cyclist Shannon McCurley’s Olympic campaign has come to an end after she was unsuccessful in the repechage stage of the Keirin competition.
McCurley represented her parent’s native Ireland at Rio in the Keirin, a form of cycling that involves competitors starting behind a moped.
Despite finishing fifth in her heat, McCurley qualified for a second chance in the repechage stage of the competition.
But it was not meant to be, with the Traralgon rider finishing 0.268 seconds behind winner Russian Anastasia Voinova.
It was an impressive performance by McCurley, who fought hard to qualify for the Games.
She made the decision to switch away from endurance racing in early 2014 in a bid to qualify for the Olympics.
It culminated in a 13th-placed finish in the 2015 London World Cup, followed by similar results this year in New Zealand.
She eventually accumulated enough points to qualify for the games.
Australian Anna Meares brought home bronze in the women’s Keirin.
