Traralgon City lights up to do double

Traralgon City senior women has cruised to a historic double after defeating Fortuna 60 5-0 to claim the Browne/Huiser Cup on Friday.

The cup victory comes less than a fortnight after the Roosters defeated Sale City 5-0 to win the Latrobe Valley Soccer League, claiming the club’s first piece of seniors silverware in the process.

City coach Duncan Hanlon said he was thrilled by his team’s performance.

“To win the league-cup double is no mean feat and the girls have worked hard for that all year,” Hanlon said.

“We had a little bit of a special reason to win today – our (club) president’s father died during the week.

“I think the girls lifted for that.”

In a match where the Roosters dominated large stretches of play, Hanlon said Fortuna put up a fight – especially in the opening stages of the match.

“They got the ball into our half a little bit more than I thought they would have,” he said.

“They pushed us a bit at the start.”

The Roosters were dominant in the midfield during much of Friday’s game, allowing the City players at times to quickly seize the ball and move it into their opponent’s half in a hunt for quick goals.

Hanlon said his side had focused on moving the ball around the pitch.

“We’ve had a solid defence all year and that’s where we’ve worked from – our defence winning the ball fairly easily and being rock solid and looking for our midfield,” he said.

“None of this kicking the ball and hoping someone runs onto it.”

The team is now gearing up for its finals campaign, which begins on Sunday.

Hanlon said the Roosters were focused on winning the finals in a bid to complete the season by claiming the last piece of silverware to elude them.

“That’s one thing we’ve said to the girls, it’s been a long season and we haven’t come this far to lay down and lose a game,” he said.

“Now we’ve done the double it’s in everyone’s sites to get their and do the treble.

“It’s definitely in our sights and our team’s definitely capable of doing it.”
