Taking time out to talk tea

Whether it is a slice of orange on a hot summer’s day or the sausage roll that warms the soul in blustery conditions, every cricketer has their opinion on what makes a good cricket afternoon tea.

With Saturday’s Central Gippsland Cricket Association round cancelled, Express journalist Jarrod Whittaker took advantage of the break in play to find out what the league’s captains and presidents think makes a good spread.

This is what they had to say:

Gordon Leys, Jeeralang Boolarra captain

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? Basically support from the mums and a bit of home cooking, which we usually have.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? Rawson, they have a pretty good spread up there. Traf put on a bit of a good spread (too).

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? Bag of potato chips.

Brendan Van Heurck, Mirboo North president

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? Variety.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? It’d have to be Latrobe. They’ve got a good variety. I always remember as a kid coming through the ranks it was the best afternoon tea in the league.

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? Lots of dry biscuits. One plate of sangas and 10 boxes of biccies just doesn’t cut it.

Andrew Philip, Moe captain

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? No biscuits, no cakes, just sandwiches and fruits and party pies.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? Latrobe. Especially when they used to do the pikelets. Mrs Freshwater used to do them.

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? Box of Shapes.

Rory Hare, Morwell captain

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? Some good scones.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? Mirboo North – their curried egg sandwiches.

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? Chocolates.

Anthony Clarke-Bruce Trafalgar captain

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? Quantity and variety.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? I wouldn’t be able to answer that one (because I’m new to the league), it’s something that our club strives to do – to make sure there’s an adequate amount food for people to eat.

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? Probably biscuits, as in people bringing some biscuits without any variety.

Callum Polo, Yallourn North captain

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? No packaged food – I hate it. Lollies, fruit, sandwiches, puffy dogs, chicken nuggets and drumsticks.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? Jeeralang Boolarra. It’s similar to ours with homemade scones, it’s unreal and there’s enough for everyone.

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? It’s a combination of things for me, it’s good old lamingtons or on those hot days everyone thinks icy poles are a good idea – I don’t. I’m not a fan.

Steve Grover, Latrobe president

What makes a good cricket afternoon tea? A good afternoon basically is how the clubs prepare it and what’s available. We have rolls with different salads you can put on it and make your own, ham, cheese and lettuce.

What club (other than your own) puts on a good feed? Mirboo North normally put on a good one, Morwell put on a good one. Most of the clubs are pretty good.

What’s the worst thing you can serve during afternoon tea? When you go to some clubs and all they’ve got is dry biscuits.
