Dashing day at the races

A healthy dose of sunshine greeted racegoers on Saturday as they flocked to Traralgon’s Latrobe Valley Racing Club for Ladies Day.

About 1400 people attended the club’s first meet of the season with many pulled by the lure of prizes offered in the fashions on the field contest.

Club chair Peter Walkley was hoping for a crowd of about 2000 racegoers but said overall it was “a really good day”.

“The people in the marquees had a great day, the weather was terrific to everybody,” Walkley said.

“There was probably about $5000 in prizes for fashions on the field, which is good for a small club like us and that will all be repeated on (Traralgon) Cup day.”

The meet gave the club an opportunity to showcase its $100,000 upgrade to its track and mounting yard.

Walkley said the upgrades had been warmly received.

“The racing industry was really pleased with the track and the mounting yard,” he said.

“We got accolades from the stewards and racing officials.”

He encouraged the community to turn out for the Traralgon Cup on Sunday, 27 November.

“We’re looking for a good turn out for that and bookings are good, but we need more support,” Walkley said.
