NORTH GIPPSLAND
Gormandale will be faced with a tough ask this weekend when they host Churchill in round three action on Saturday at Gormandale Recreation Reserve from 2pm.
The Cougars faltered in round one but bounced back in round two in style with a 49-point win over Glengarry.
Travis Brighton and Blake Slater were key for the Cougars in the win and kicked three each while Brendan Mason was the other multiple goal scorer and was best on ground with two.
The Tigers came crashing back to earth in round two at the hands of Yarram after winning their first senior game in 707 days in round one.
They came within 19 points at the main break but the unrelenting Demons piled on the pressure and goals in the second half to notch a 67-point win.
Cowwarr v Heyfield
Cowwarr and Heyfield will both look to return to the winners’ list this weekend when they meet on Saturday at Glengarry Recreation Reserve from 2pm after suffering significant losses in round two.
The Roos were disappointing against Woodside in the wet at the weekend and had just a single goal to three-quarter time.
Another two came in the final term but it wasn’t nearly enough to prevent the 42-point blowout.
Cowwarr suffered a similar fate against Rosedale and went down by 46 points, but seven individual goal kickers showed the Saints are capable of scoring well.
When the sides met in round 16 last season Heyfield stacked on 16 goals in their 74-point drubbing of the Saints.
Jesse Jackway snagged six in the Roos’ win and Josh Stubbe two, but the Roos are a completely different prospect this time around without either player.
Sale City v Glengarry
Glengarry will be keen to pounce on a vulnerable Sale City side this weekend when they travel to take on the defending premiers on Saturday at Stephensons Park from 2pm.
The Bulldogs were on the receiving end of a shock upset in round two when they fell by a single point to Traralgon Tyers United.
The Dogs were leading early in the final term and had opportunities to put the game to bed but let the Bombers off the hook and gave away the win with inaccuracy in front of goal.
Glengarry also suffered a loss in round two and couldn’t match it with Churchill on their way to a 49-point defeat.
If the result of round 18 last year is anything to go by, Glengarry will be up against the odds this weekend.
Sale City stacked on 23 goals at Stephensons Park on their way a massive 136-point win.
Woodside v Traralgon Tyers United
Traralgon Tyers United will look to capitalise on their most recent form this weekend when they travel to meet Woodside on Saturday from 2pm.
TTU caused the upset of the round at the weekend and toppled defending premiers Sale City by a point after trailing at every break.
Woodside also enjoyed a win in round two and held Heyfield to just three goals on their way to a 42-point win.
When the sides met in round 11 last season the Bombers squandered their opportunities on goal and inaccuracy proved to be their undoing in the eight-point loss.
Yarram v Rosedale
Yarram and Rosedale both enjoyed emphatic wins in round two and will meet at Yarram Recreation Reserve in round three from 2pm.
Last year’s runner’s up showed form reminiscent of their 2017 season and were unforgiving in their treatment of Gormandale with a 67-point win.
All the usual suspects reared for the Demons in the win with Tyler Chisholm and Corbin Sutherland notching three goals each while Jarryd and Josh Swift both kicked two.
After a disappointing loss to Woodside in round one in which they kicked four goals and 20 behinds, Rosedale notched their first win of the season in round two with a commanding 46-point win over Cowwarr.
Rosedale was spared complete embarrassment when they last played Yarram in round 16 of 2017 after the Demons kicked 14 goals and 17 behinds on their way to a six-goal win.
