Roos rally to see off resurgent Saints threat

FOOTBALL

NORTH GIPPSLAND

Heyfield have held off a resilient Cowwarr outfit to run out winners in round three, 13.11 (89) to 11.16 (82) at Glengarry Recreation Reserve.

The Saints had the bulk of play in the first term with nine scoring shots to the Roos’ six to lead by eight points at quarter time.

It was blow-for-blow in the second quarter but Cowwarr retained the lead to be up by five at half-time.

A slight reversal of fortunes in the third helped Heyfield make up for the downfall and a four goal-to-one third quarter had it up by 12 points at the last break.

Despite their best efforts, the Saints could not etch back the deficit and fell by seven points at the final siren.

James Beha, Mark Johnston and Matthew Millar shared the goal kicking duties for Heyfield in the win and finished with three each while best on ground plaudits went to Beha, Brad Page and Shaun Humphreys.

Gormandale v Churchill

Brendan Holt and Chris Williams have combined to kick 12 goals to lead Churchill to a resounding win over Gormandale on Saturday, 28.8 (176) to 12.14 (86).

Holt and Williams kicked six each in the landslide win while Ben Kearns chipped in with five goals of his own and Travis Brighton and Blake Slate each kicked three.

The Cougars led at every break and stretched it to 69 at the three-quarter-time to put the results beyond doubt.

Chase Saunders did his bit up forward for Gormandale and kicked five to earn best on ground honours in his first hit out of the season while Troy Forrest helped out and bagged three.

Kurt Holt was best on ground for Churchill in the win alongside Brendan Holt, Travis Brighton and Nathan McCrae.

Sale City v Glengarry

Defending premiers Sale City have bounced back after a glitch in round two to record a win over Glengarry in round three, 11.15 (81) to 10.6 (66).

The first term was even going and misfired shots on goal helped Sale City to a four-point buffer at the first break.

The lead ballooned to 24 at half-time and 28 at the last break to give the Bulldogs a handy buffer heading into the last term.

Bohdi Walker kicked three goals for the Bulldogs in the win and was supported by Daniel Byron and Clint Counahan who both kicked two.

Kody Richards was awarded best on ground plaudits for Sale City in the win while Ben Chivers, Dylan McClay and Bohdi Walker were also among the best.

Andrew May was somewhat of a lone soldier for Glengarry up forward and bagged five goals in his side’s loss.

Woodside v TTU

Woodside have blown 10-point lead at half-time to go down to Traralgon Tyers United on Saturday, 18.11 (119) to 11.11 (77).

The Wildcats had the bulk of the play in the first half and helped themselves to a handy lead at the main break after a five-goal second term.

They were stunned after halftime as the Bombers flew into gear and reared with a score to settle in the third, stacking on nine goals to the Wildcats’ one to lead by 39 points heading into the last quarter.

TTU managed to hold off the home side on the run home to score another three goals and win by 42 points.

Goal kicking duties were shared for the Bombers with Jacob Albanese, Tyler Mustoe and Jye Nielson each bagging three while Hayden Willaton scored two.

Bill Morrison was best on ground for TTU in the win while Albanese, Ricky Cochrane and Mustoe also featured in the honours list.

Yarram v Rosedale

Yarram recorded the biggest winning margin in the North Gippsland league at the weekend with an outright drubbing of Rosedale, 20.14 (134) to 5.8 (38).

The Demons looked indomitable in the first term and stacked on five goals while allowing the Blues just a single point on their way to a 31-point lead at the first break.

There was no letting up in the second as a luckless Rosedale were allowed just a single major while Yarram helped themselves to another four to blow their lead out to 53 at half-time.

The defending runners up signalled they were intent on revenge in 2018 in the third quarter as they scored eight goals to Rosedale’s one to leave them reeling 97 points in the red at the last break.

The last quarter was a mere formality and Yarram scored another three to record a 96-point win. Daniel Vardy was the man of the moment for the Demons and kicked six goals in a best on ground performance.
