New facilities sweeten move for croquet club

After calling Breed Street its home for more than 60 years, the Traralgon Croquet Club is on the move.

The club, which has been in operation for more than a century, has agreed to relocate to McNairn Road in a bid to make use of the available flat land in the recreation precinct.

The relocation has been stamped by Traralgon Croquet Club officials as an opportunity to relaunch the club for the next 100 years.

The new facilities will include an additional fourth court and lighting and will facilitate more evening play and increase the club’s capacity to host tournaments and other major events.

Traralgon Croquet Club vice-president Simon Trebilcock said the impending relocation of the club was overwhelmingly received well by members.

“It’s exciting in that we get the chance to have some new facilities and a new club house and that sort of stuff,” Trebilcock said.

“Members here today and those that have gone before us have been good stewards of this club and we have a lot of history here, but it’s exciting.”

With the move about a year away, Trebilcock also said the new facilities would allow the club to expand its membership base.

“We’ve got about 37 members at the moment and hopefully with the extra court and the lights … it means we can play more nights and have more people playing in general,” he said.

“When we were approached about relocating we didn’t want to stick our feet in the ground … it’s a very exciting thing for the clubs.”
