The Traralgon Table Tennis Association hosted Wonthaggi Table Tennis Association for their annual contest on Saturday at the Davidson Street complex.
Wonthaggi brought seven teams to the 2018 event but no countback was required like in the last two contests.
Both clubs were missing a few of their top-ranked players with no clear favourite heading into the day.
The tournament was a great lead up to next month’s Victorian Country Championships.
Two junior tables accompanied five senior tables and a great day of competition was had by all involved.
The junior table section seven was won by Wonthaggi, 7-4, with Traralgon’s Mia Spasato, Quyhn An and Quynh Cottrell providing great competition but unable to secure victory.
Traralgon’s Declan Boyd, Heath Spasato and Ella Lawn won junior table section six, 7-4.
In section five, Traralgon’s Jamie Sjamsudin, Noel Burns and Nicky Marchesi proved far too good for Wonthaggi, winning 9-2.
Section four resulted in another victory to Traralgon with no less than seven games going to four or five sets and the hosts took the table, 8-3.
Anton Fullerton spearheaded the team with three singles and two doubles victories with team mates Norm Cottrell and Ron Winklemann.
The visitors fought back in section three and won the table, 8-3.
Traralgon’s Guri Soni, Ray Campbell and Tony Hiriatt were competitive but lost three matches in close five-set games.
Section two was the closest table of the day with Traralgon’s Geoff Lawn, Jeff Pollard and Kevin Morley putting on a show.
All three players won their singles matches and the doubles was split one apiece.
Lawn was the hero of the day and won the last match of the table when scores were tied at 5-5.
The section two win handed Traralgon the fourth table and sealed overall victory.
Wonthaggi were too strong in section one, overpowering Traralgon’s Ian Strong, Steve Boyd and Mark Strini, 10-1.
Sets were won in various matches but the visitors were too strong on the day.
The final results went the way of Traralgon, 4-3, in a great day’s play.
With some 114 teams registered for the Country Championships next month, Traralgon will field 10 sides.
