Bocce women win national honours

Two members of the Morwell Bocce Club can now call themselves Australian champions after returning from the national championships with gold in hand.

Maria Maselli and Anna Prezioso took out the ladies’ doubles title over Victoria Metro by a single point in a thrilling final over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

“We won the triples last year and every year it gets harder and harder – we get a year older, but it was really good,” Maselli said.

“Over the weekend we won all the doubles and the final was very exciting and very close.”

Christina Finocchiaro and Dianne Penney also represented Morwell at the championships in the ladies’ division and made it through to the final with the side coached by Mary Pagani.

On the men’s side of the draw, Joe Maselli, Felice Prezioso and Nick Penney also enjoyed great success and made it down to the last hurdle under the tutelage of Sally Fava.

Nick Penney, Joe Maselli and Diane Penney competed in the throwing events and held their own while Morwell’s own Frank Fava served as chief referee for the weekend.

The Morwell Bocce Club is preparing for the annual Latrobe City Bocce Classic which will be held across the first weekend of July.

“We have the classics here every year and we get 24 teams from the metro areas, and this year one team is coming from Cooma and one from Sydney, so it’s something we look forward to every year,” Maselli said.

“The club does very well and it brings people to the area which is important and we’re happy to do it.”

The Latrobe City Bocce Classic will be held on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8 at the Morwell Bocce Club.
