The Latrobe Valley Hockey Association recently sent a women’s team to the senior country week championships in Geelong over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
The team played their first game on Saturday against East Gippsland and came away with a 1-0 win.
The second game on Saturday was against Geelong with Latrobe winning 3-0.
On day two the team had three games – the first against Ballarat resulted in a 3-2 win.
Later games against Portland and Ballarat resulted in a two-all draw in both matches.
With no losses on the board, Latrobe finished
the round robin games on top but numerous injuries reduced the team to no substitutes by the end of the second day.
The finals on Monday saw Latrobe play East Gippsland for a spot in the grand final and scores were locked at two-all all with one minute to go.
A penalty corner resulted in Latrobe scoring a goal after the final siren to secure a spot in the gold medal match against Portland.
All players pushed themselves and overcame injuries and put in their all to win the grand final 2-1.
All players thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and are already planning to return next year to defend their title.
