GIPPSLAND was well represented in the AFLW grand final last Saturday.
The match between Adelaide and Melbourne saw a trio of local players step onto Adelaide Oval in front of 16,712 spectators for the Demons.
Morwell Football-Netball Club product Casey Sherriff flew the Latrobe Valley flag on the big stage, alongside Gippsland teammates Megan Fitzsimon (from Bairnsdale) and Tayla Hanks (Nar Nar Goon). The grand final capped off a meteoric rise for Sherriff, who joined Melbourne in late 2018 as cover for Demon’s skipper Daisy Pearce.
Unfortunately the grand final ended in a double-blow for Sherriff, as Melbourne lost 4.5 (29) to 2.4 (16) and the defender was taken from the ground with a fractured left wrist late in the game.
The Demons got to within seven points during the last quarter, but a goal to the Crows against the run of play sealed the deal.
Sherriff ended the match with four disposals and two tackles.
The 23-year-old has played 27 games for Melbourne since debuting in 2020.
