Despite sitting on top of the ladder with only one loss, Rosedale coach Damien Birss believes the side’s best football is yet to come.
Returning to the club after one year break from coaching, Birss has Rosedale in fine form heading into the second half of the season.
“I’m really glad to be back; it’s a great club to be at and I’m rapt to be coaching again,” Birss said.
Birss attributed the team’s success this year to the “players’ attitudes” and their “will to improve”.
“Last year the club also lost a few guys for various reasons, and when I came back I was pretty keen to pick them up again and we were lucky enough to do that, which is what’s given us a lot of depth,” Birss said.
This season, Rosedale has had 33 players unavailable due to injury or other reasons, supporting Birss’ claim the side has significant depth to it.
“It has given us the chance to bring a lot of guys up from the thirds, who have been in the senior system for a couple of years,” he said.
“Everyone’s getting a go, and it’s a great position to be in when you can have that many players out and still be competitive.”
Coming into the second half of the season, Birss said he also had confidence in the state of the North Gippsland competition.
“It’s in a very healthy state right now,” he said.
“All sides are improving, and from now on if you don’t play well you’re going to get beaten.”
As for Rosedale, Birss wants to see “constant improvement” from his players.
“We’re not playing the standard of football we’re hoping to achieve just yet, but things are looking very good.”
